Jaw Btx

One of the most requested for procedures in Singapore, and also at Mizu. Jaw muscle reduction is a simple procedure done by using Botox to reduce the size of the jaw muscles (the masseter muscles). This sharpens the face for a slimmer and more feminine look.

How does botox for jaw reduction work

Botox works by inhibiting muscle movement – to be exact, botox limits nerve impulses from being transmitted from the brain to the muscles. These impulses travel through our nervous system and crosses from nerve to nerve at junctions called the nerve synapses.

When botox is injected into a muscle, this muscle relaxes and becomes weaker. A good example of how a muscle weakens and decreases in size is a scenario of a body builder.

As a body builder trains and build up his muscles, the muscles become stronger and increase in size (this is why people who grind their teeth at night have bigger jaw muscles). When the body builder stops training, the muscles become weaker and eventually shrink in size. This is the same with the jaw muscles.

With botox, the jaw muscles become weaker and is not used as much. Over a period of 3-4 weeks, the jaw muscles shrink in size and become smaller, achieving the results of a slimmer face shape.

The results last for 5-7 months, depending on individual. Results might last shorter for patients who grind their teeth at night as their muscles are usually stronger.

Other than slimming the face, jaw Botox also helps reduce trismus. Trismus is the medical term for teeth grinding.

Teeth grinding is caused by overactive jaw muscles and happens usually during periods of stress or unknowingly when a patient is asleep. Jaw Botox relaxes the overactive jaw muscles and prevent the grinding motion.

For people who grind their teeth / are doing botox for TMJ / Locked Jaw conditions: the effects will start to show in 3-7 days and teeth grinding will improve then.

For jawline slimming: It takes 3-4 weeks for the reduction in size of the jaw muscles. This is because it takes time for the weaken muscles to shrink in size.

Numbing cream is applied before and the procedure is very comfortable. Some tingling sensation might be felt when the Botox is administered due to the solution.

Some patients do not even need numbing cream as this procedure takes less than 5 minutes and is very tolerable.

Like all injections, there is a small chance of bruising.

Very rarely, there can be a small risk of a stiffer smile. This happens when the Botox affects the Risorius muscle which is a muscle connected to the jaw muscles. Patients might feel that their smile is stiffer but this effect gradually goes away after 4 weeks.
