Why is collagen so important?
It is a protein that’s abundant in our body – in terms of mass, it is only ranked second to albumin. Collagen protein is created by fibroblast cells in the deeper part of the skin called the dermis. As we age, we lose about 1% of collagen every year. Losing collagen (and other molecules), creates the signs of facial aging – wrinkles, folds, open pores, heavy eyelids, skin laxity and uneven skin tone.
Despite all the struggles faced in trying to increase collagen levels to keep one’s skin firm, supple and youthful, the medical aesthetic community never gave up on it; after all, it constitutes up to 80% of your skin.
That’s where Thermage comes in. The Thermage uses your body’s own natural mechanism to increase collagen levels where they are deficient. Collagen “produced” through this means is long lasting, safe, and best of all, completely natural because the collagen is manufactured by your own fibroblast cells.
At Mizu, we use the latest Thermage FLX – the 4th Generation of Thermage, which is faster, better and much more effective than Thermage CPT.
Thermage works on the principle of simultaneous cooling and heating of the skin using a specialised handpiece and tip. There are 4 phases to each thermage shots – 1. Cooling the surface of the skin down, 2. Heating the surface of the skin using radiofrequency, 3. Allowing the heat to penetrate into the dermis (where the magic works), 4. Cooling down again.
Through this carefully engineered shot sequence, radiofrequency heat can penetrate into the dermis to cause crucial collagen molecules to undergo heat damage and repair. This process also stimulates the production new collagen molecules.
As collagen is produced over time, skin gets tighter, smoother and appear brighter and more refreshed. It takes 8-12 weeks for full results to be seen.
Thermage is suitable for both men and women between 30 to 60, with:
A consultation will be performed by the doctor to assess suitability, followed by photos for documentation. Numbing cream will be applied for at least 30 minutes prior to the procedure.
A cooling and conducting fluid will be used to aid the delivery of radio frequency onto the skin and help keep the skin cool. Thermage radio frequency is then administered to the skin shot by shot, until sufficient coverage has been achieved. The doctor will adjust the settings on Thermage FLX according to which area is being treated and your comfort level.
Common side effects include temporary (1 hour) of facial redness, numbness of the face lasting a few hours.
Uncommon side effects such as rashes, mild burns, pigmentation changes are readily treatable.

In the China market, the Thermage is commonly referred to as the 5th Generation as it takes into account the very first Thermage machine (which was not named Thermage!). However, the factually correct version of the machine will be the 4th Generation, which is the latest version at the time of writing (2021).
Thermage FLX, which is the latest and 4th generation of the Thermage machine, which uses the latest AccuREPTM technology. This auto-tunes each pulse of energy for an even more precise and consistent treatment, suited to your skin.
The New Total Tip 4.0 is larger (4cm² surface area as compared to 3rd Gen’s CPT’s 3cm² ) can speed up treatment by up to 25%. The multidirectional vibration also offers a more comfortable experience for face and body treatments.
