Skin boosters for rejuvenation and repair, such as the Rejuran Healer and Plinest, are made up of polynucleotides (PN). Polynucleotide chains are DNA fragments that help repair damaged dermal (skin) cells and assist in collagen stimulation. Rejuran is also known in the market as 婴儿针 (in Mandarin).
Polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN) have previously been used as skin injectables for anti-ageing and hair growth treatments in Korea, and medically for skin regeneration. PN is a purer and more concentrated form of PDRN and has stronger regenerative properties.
PN is a biopolymer consisting of nucleotide monomers bonded together, forming the building blocks of DNA and RNA. When used in skincare, PN serves as a regenerative ingredient that can help improve the skin. PN can be obtained from different sources and is known for its ability to promote collagen production, repair damaged skin cells, improve skin hydration and elasticity, and restore the skin’s natural barrier.
PN in Rejuran is extracted from salmon DNA, while Plinest is extracted from trout DNA, both of which are known to have excellent biocompatibility with human skin without causing an immune response, making this skin rejuvenation treatment suitable for most people.
Plinest comes in 2 forms.
The ever-popular skin boosters, or 水光针, are hyaluronic acid injectable skin rejuvenation treatments. Hyaluronic acid skin boosters are effective for hydration and brightening but do not have collagen-stimulating and anti-ageing properties like Rejuran Healer or Plinest, which contain polynucleotides.
Aside from hydration, Rejuran Healer or Plinest treatments can provide tighter, brighter, and softer skin. Skin boosters and Rejuran/Plinest can be combined for enhanced results.
Before the procedure, a topical numbing cream is applied to ensure comfort during the treatment.
Skin boosters are injected into the dermis layer of the skin with a very small needle. Dr YZ Tan recommends this technique as it helps to prevent product leakage during the procedure. Additionally, with manual injections, the downtime is typically lesser and minimal.
After the procedure, a LED light therapy is used to further enhance results and recovery.
Both Rejuran Healer and Plinest skin booster treatments use 1 syringe (2ml) for a full face treatment. It is recommended to undergo 3 to 4 treatments, spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. For maintenance, a single treatment is typically repeated once every 6 to 12 months to help combat the effects of ageing.
The restoration and skin rejuvenation process largely depends on an individual’s cellular turnover rate. However, improvement in the skin can often be observed within a few days of the first treatment, with the best results typically seen after 3-4 treatments.
Downtime is minimal as the needle used is very small. Patients may experience slight bumpiness of the skin right after the treatment, but this usually subsides within 30 to 60 minutes.
Minimal redness is experienced with manual injections, which is why it is also a popular choice with Dr Tan.
We start ageing and losing collagen from our mid-twenties; hence, this treatment may be recommended for both men and women from their mid-twenties onwards. It is also suitable for people suffering from sunken acne scars and poor skin texture.
