The latest innovation in body slimming and sculpting, the non-invasive Onda body sculpting treatment utilises a patented Coolwaves™ technology to reduce localised fat, remodel skin to get rid of cellulite and regenerate collagen to tighten skin all with a single device.
A first-of-its-kind in the market, Coolwaves™ is a microwave technology that selectively targets fat cells to reduce localised fat deposits in a safe, effective and non-invasive way. Onda’s Coolwaves™ emits controlled microwaves at 2.45GHz, a frequency that is preferentially absorbed by fat molecules rather than water molecules.
This allows it to target localised fat without affecting the surrounding tissue – only 20% of the emitted energy is retained in the dermis, whilst 80% penetrates into the fat layer to heat fat cells to a temperature of between 50-55°C.
There are many factors such as genetics, sex, age and amount of fat on your body, that determine how much cellulite you have and how visible it is. Cellulite is very common, but it is more prevalent in women than in men because of the difference in our skin structures.
Cellulite is formed when chambers of built-up fat push up against the skin while weakened connective collagen fibres pull it down, resulting in an uneven (‘orange-peel’) surface.
Coolwaves™ is absorbed by these fibrous connective tissue, solubilising old collagen while regenerating new collagen fibres. Simultaneously as fat cells get eliminated, it reduces the compression against the tissue, resulting in a reduction in cellulite.
Unlike Onda’s Coolwaves™ which bypasses the skin layer, radiofrequency energy gets retained in the epidermis and dermis, which may cause tissue damage if the skin is overheated. This also means that the energy from these procedures cannot be too high so that the skin does not get damaged.
Onda also comes with 2 unique ‘deep’ and ‘shallow’ handpieces that cater to different depths depending on the treatment type and area to be treated. Both handpieces are integrated with a high-tech skin cooling system that counteracts some of the superficial heating and reduces the amount of heat that gets retained in the skin to only approximately 6%. This protects the epidermis and makes it a safe and comfortable procedure.
Because the microwave energy mostly bypasses the skin layer, very little heat gets retained in the dermis, minimising any damage to the surrounding tissue.
Onda’s integrated cooling technology in its handpieces helps prevent damage to the superficial layers of the skin. Compared to other similar energy-based treatments, the risk of minor side effects like overheating or burns is significantly reduced.
This technology also makes the treatment comfortable while optimum energy is delivered for more efficient reduction of fat.
Onda is a good procedure for those who have issues with stubborn fat and cellulite. Suitable candidates, however, should have at least 1cm of pinchable fat in shallow areas like double chin, and at least 2cm for larger body areas like tummy, flank, back and thighs. Those with more than 6cm of pinchable fat however will not benefit from this procedure.
There are instances too where patients will not be suitable for Onda. This will be assessed during a consultation with our doctors.
The number of treatment sessions required depends on the patient and the treatment area(s). Generally, at least 4 to 6 treatment sessions of Onda are usually recommended for significant and long-lasting results in slimming, cellulite reduction or skin tightening. Treatments should be spaced at least 4 weeks apart for fat reduction, and 3 to 4 weeks apart for treatment of cellulite.
At Mizu, we believe in curating a holistic programme for each patient based on their individual concerns and goals. Every patient will undergo a consultation with our doctors to assess their suitability and understand their goals before a treatment plan is recommended. This means that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment approach, and various body procedures like Cooltech and EvolveX may be paired together for the best results.
The treatment area(s) to target will be demarcated and cleansed before commencing the procedure. Each treatment area of around 15cm by 15cm takes approximately 8 to 16 minutes. A maximum of 8 areas can be treated in each session.
To help with lymphatic drainage, patients are encouraged to drink plenty of water before and after the treatment. It is also recommended to go for a lymphatic drainage massage after.
Post-treatment, patients should avoid direct exposure to the sun for at least 2 days and from extreme hot or cold environments. If the skin is pink or red after treatment, refrain from washing in hot water until it has subsided.
Some itching, redness, tenderness or swelling over the treated areas may occur, which should resolve over a few days.
