The pursuit of firmer, more youthful-looking skin has led to increasing interest in non-invasive treatment options. Traditional surgical facelifts, while effective, often involve significant downtime, cost, and risk. In contrast, ultrasound-based skin tightening treatments such as HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) have emerged as a widely used alternative, offering a non-surgical route to facial rejuvenation.
Different ultrasound-based treatments cater to patients with varying degrees of skin laxity and aesthetic goals. Understanding how these treatments work and how they differ from other skin tightening technologies is crucial for making an informed decision. In this article, we delve into ultrasound technology, how it can help tighten your skin, and what to expect when you are considering HIFU treatment.
HIFU refers to a class of treatments that use high-intensity focused ultrasound to deliver energy to specific skin depths, usually 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm, and 4.5 mm. At Mizu Aesthetic Clinic, we offer the following HIFU-based treatments:
Ultherapy: This is an FDA-approved device that delivers precise ultrasound energy to the 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5mm layers. It comes with a built-in ultrasound imaging that allows your practitioner visualisation of the underlying structures to ensure safe and accurate energy delivery.
Ultraformer MPT: The Korean counterpart to Ultherapy, the Ultraformer MPT combines both micro and macro-focused ultrasound to treat not only the traditional 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5mm skin depths but also additional depths of 2.0 mm and more. It offers tailored treatment with two different modes and an additional booster handpiece, enabling your doctor to customise settings for your unique skin needs.
Mini HIFU: A version of HIFU tailored by Mizu, this is a lower-energy, compact version designed using the Ultraformer MPT for patients who have a lower threshold for pain and downtime. It may be recommended for those who do not require intensive lifting or are looking for low-fuss anti-ageing maintenance.
Each treatment is selected based on individual skin type, area of concern, and treatment goals. For more information, book an appointment with us today.
In addition to HIFU, several other energy-based modalities are used for skin tightening and rejuvenation. While they share the goal of stimulating collagen, their mechanisms and target depths differ.
Sofwave: Uses synchronous ultrasound parallel beam technology to heat the mid-dermis (~1.5 mm). It is commonly used to improve the appearance of fine lines and crepey skin. Unlike HIFU, Sofwave delivers a higher energy output only at the 1.5 mm depth, which means it does not affect facial volume and instead focuses on skin tightening and wrinkle reduction.
Radiofrequency (RF) and RF Microneedling: RF treatments generate heat through electrical current, stimulating collagen production within the dermis. It is usually delivered via uniform bulk heating to improve skin laxity and smooth out fine lines. In some devices, RF energy may also be combined with microneedling, where RF energy is delivered through microchannels created by needles, enhancing penetration and effect. This modality is often used for improving skin texture, pores and fine lines.
Titanium Lifting: This non-invasive triple-wavelength laser lifting technology targets multiple skin layers to brighten, tighten and sculpt facial contours. It promotes collagen production and improves skin elasticity, giving your skin a firmer, more youthful appearance while improving surface radiance. Because of the lower intensity of heat energy as compared to the other energy-based treatments like HIFU, Titanium Lifting typically requires more sessions for optimal results.
Each treatment modality has its specific indications and benefits. The choice depends on multiple factors, including the area to be treated, degree of skin laxity, patient age, and treatment goals. Book a consultation with us to learn more.
A typical HIFU experience at Mizu begins with a detailed consultation. We will evaluate your skin type, laxity, and areas of concern to determine the most suitable skin tightening treatment. Photographs may be taken for clinical reference and baseline documentation.
During the HIFU procedure, a layer of ultrasound gel is applied, and the handpiece is used to deliver focused energy to targeted tissue depths. Some patients may feel warmth or a prickling sensation.
For treatments like Ultherapy or Ultraformer MPT, local anaesthesia, on top of topical numbing, may be offered to improve comfort. Mini HIFU and Sofwave treatments are generally well-tolerated with topical numbing.
Most sessions last between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the treatment area. After the procedure, patients can usually return to normal activities. Mild redness, tenderness, or swelling may occur and typically resolve within hours to a few days.
Ultrasound-based treatments do not produce instant results. Collagen remodelling is a gradual process. Visible improvements in skin firmness and contour may begin to appear after six weeks, with peak results around 12 to 16 weeks.
Full-powered HIFU devices such as Ultraformer MPT and Ultherapy may offer results lasting up to 12 months. Lower-intensity options like Mini HIFU may require more frequent treatments to maintain effect. Maintenance intervals range from 6 to 12 months, depending on the device used and individual skin response.
HIFU may be considered for individuals with mild to moderate skin laxity who are looking for a non-invasive solution to lift and firm the face or neck. It can also be suitable for those who have noticed early signs of sagging or wish to prevent premature skin ageing.
Factors such as age, degree of laxity, skin thickness, and previous treatments are taken into account during consultation. Those with severe laxity, or who prefer more dramatic changes, may be advised to explore a multimodal treatment approach.
At Mizu, ultrasound-based treatments are chosen and administered based on professional assessment, device suitability, and individual patient needs. With access to multiple ultrasound modalities, including Ultherapy, Ultraformer MPT, Mini HIFU, and Sofwave, treatment can be tailored to different skin types and rejuvenation goals.
Every procedure begins with a personalised assessment to determine appropriateness and safety. Devices are operated by trained practitioners using established protocols, ensuring that patient comfort and outcomes remain central to the treatment process.
