What is an Ultraformer HIFU procedure?
HIFU, or High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, uses precise medical ultrasound for non-surgical tightening and lifting of the skin.
How does it work?
Based on mature, time-tested High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology, Ultraformer HIFU effectively treats the superficial and deeper skin layers, as well as the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) with a triple layer lifting effect.
Heating the targeted area to between 65-75 degrees C, the Ultraformer HIFU’s highly focused ultrasound energy creates thermal coagulation (heating) zones at 1.5mm, 3mm, and 4.5mm depths, thus covering all layers of the skin and resulting in maximum tightening and lifting effect.
Collagen is the main component in our skin that gives the skin it’s ‘tightness’. Ultraformer HIFU energy heats the existing collagen fibres, leading to denaturation. This stimulates the collagen fibres to thicken and shorten, resulting in increased tension in the fibres and causing a long-term tightening and lifting effect.
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound is currently the only non-invasive medical device that allows the deepest penetration of energy, up to 4.5mm, for skin lifting and tightening. The HIFU improves this benefit by not only targeting the depth of 4.5mm, it also allows penetration depths of 1.5mm and 3mm.
Each depth is targeted for different benefits:
Demonstrated to lighten pigmentation and lighten skin colour by Dr Beom-Joon Kim, professor at R&D Centre of Chung-Ang University South Korea.
The amount of melanin in the skin showed good reduction after 4 weekly treatments with the Ultraformer HIFU at 1.5mm depth.
Heating of tissue at 3mm is mainly targeted for skin tightening. As some might know, radiofrequency procedures, like Thermage, is used for skin tightening and heats the skin up at 3mm. HIFU is also able to target this depth of the skin, where structural collagen is situated, and deliver precise energy to stimulate collagen production.
At 4.5mm, this is where the lifting effect takes place. The Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) is usually situated at this depth. The SMAS layer is the layer that surgeons tighten when performing surgical face lifts. Therefore, with the stimulation and tightening of the SMAS layer with the Ultraformer HIFU 4.5mm depth, you will be able to see excellent lifting results.
How is this procedure different from other non-surgical skin tightening procedures?
As mentioned, HIFU is currently the only non-invasive medical ultrasound procedure that allows the deepest penetration of energy, up to 4.5mm, for skin lifting and tightening.
Mizu is using the latest and most advanced version of HIFU technology – Ultraformer HIFU III – a 3rd generation medical ultrasound device. Those who are familiar with Ulthera or Ultherapy, will know that these 1st-generation devices also utilised medical ultrasound for tightening and lifting of the skin.
Improvements have been made on the 1st generation devices. The main improvement is the comfort level during the procedure. Many patients who have lower tolerance gave feedback that the 1st generation ultrasound procedures tend to be quite uncomfortable. However raising the comfort level will require the doctor to lower the energy settings and this will compromise on results.
The Ultraformer HIFU III, a 3rd generation device, has greatly reduced the discomfort during the procedure. This allows us to perform the procedure at the optimum energy level, and also allows us to perform more ‘shot counts’ on targeted areas for better results without discomfort.
What is the procedure like?
The Ultrafomer HIFU is a comfortable procedure. Patients might feel a mild ache along bony areas, like the jawline. This is due to the ultrasound energy reflecting off the facial contours.
Ultrafomer HIFU takes approximately 60 minutes and has minimal downtime.
Your skin may appear slightly flushed immediately after the treatment, but any redness will subside within a few hours.
How many treatments will I need?
Soon after an Ultraformer HIFU treatment session, patients will appreciate a firmer feel to the skin, along with smoothening of fine lines. Maintenance treatments can be done once every 6 months or once every 12 months, depending on the degree of lifting and tightening that needs to be addressed.
What areas of the face and neck are treated?
Ultraformer HIFU can be done on any part of your face including the forehead, temples, mid and lower face, around the eyes, and jaw line. In some cases, the neck is also treated for laxity and double chins. The most popular treatment is the full face and neck treatment which gives patients the maximum visible benefits.
What kind of results can I expect?
Ultraformer HIFU works for the face and neck lifting, skin tightening, wrinkles, and pores reduction (superficial skin tightening), V-face shaping, jowl line lifting, double chin reduction, cheeks, and skin tone improvement.
Is the procedure safe and am I suitable for the Ultraformer?
Ultraformer HIFU is safe for all skin types. Any patient who has experienced some sagging of skin will benefit from this treatment. It is likely that if your sagging is severe, you may need a repeat treatment for optimal results.
Patients who want a sharper face, or a V-shaped face, can also benefit from the Ultraformer. The lifting effect of the Ultraformer can be used to lift the cheeks and jawline, resulting in a sharper and more defined lower face.
